LIFEGUARDING PROGRAMS
National Lifeguard Service Pool Option
Pre-requisites:
Bronze Cross (completed by start of first class)
Candidate is required to be 16 years old
Description: Recognized as the
standard measurement of life guarding
performance in Canada, the NLS program
develops a sound understanding of life
guarding principles, good judgement and
communication skills, and a mature and
responsible attitude toward the role of the
lifeguard. The NLS lifeguards primary role
is to prevent injuries (and when necessary,
effectively manage emergencies) and to
facilitate a safe and enjoyable aquatic
experience. NLS training develops the basic
life guarding skills needed to adapt to
different aquatic facilities and environment
specific items leading to certification in
one of the NLS options: Pool, Waterfront,
Surf, or Waterpark. All NLS certifications
are current for two years; to remain
current, candidates must recertify every 2
years. Aquatic Emergency Care (AEC) is
equivalent to SFA as an NLS prerequisite.
Also included with the course is a fanny pack & pocket mask.
Aquatic & Emergency Care
Pre-requisites:
Bronze Medallion (completed by start of first class)
Description: Take your lifesaving
training to the next level! If you are
planning to be a professional lifeguard or
looking for more comprehensive first aid and
lifesaving training, Aquatic Emergency Care
will give you the edge. Taught by a
certified Lifesaving Society First Aid
Instructor, AEC provides hands-on training
in the care of injuries and illness common
to both aquatic and non-aquatic settings.
Learn how to recognize and treat injuries
including head & spinal, bone& joint,
abdominal & chest, burns, obstructed
airways, and other common medical
emergencies, AEC is Standard First Aid
equivalent and includes CPR-C certification.

PROGRAMS

Cross
Assistant Water Safety Instructor Course
(AWSI)
30 hour program (plus 8 hours teaching
experience)
This certification course is prerequisite to
the Red Cross Water Safety Instructor
course. The course covers the foundation of
instructional skills including teaching
methods, learning styles, physical
principles, programs, communications, safety
supervision and feedback. Candidates are
evaluated during 8 hours of assistant
teaching and through individual study
assignments. Upon successful completion of
the course candidates are certified as
Assistant Water Safety Instructors, which
enables them to co-teach the Red Cross Swim
Program under the supervision of a fully
certified Water Safety Instructor.
Once certified AWSI have two years to become
a fully certified Water Safety Instructor.

Red Cross
Water Safety Instructor Course (WSI)
25 hour program (plus 12 hours teaching
experience)
Pre-requisites:
16 years of age and AWSI
The Water Safety Instructor (WSI) course
further develops Instructional abilities by
focusing on how to effectively plan and
teach the Red Cross curriculum for Red Cross
Swim Preschool, Red Cross Swim Kids and Aqua
Adults programs. The course focuses on
effectively applying the information learned
in the AWSI course to the Red Cross Swim
Program. Other topics include instructional
emergency response skills and stroke
development, drills and corrective
strategies. Candidates apply their teaching
skills and knowledge during 12 hours of
practical teaching experience. Upon
successful completion of the course
candidates are certified as Water Safety
Instructors. To remain valid WSI must be
recertified every two years.
